Optimus Sport Big Flap F5J Super Light
The Big Flap features wider flaps and ailerons for increased roll response in low speed maneuvering. Larger surfaces mean smaller deflections for a desired outcome which results in lower drag. Further camber changes are more effective.
The Optimus sport is an evolution of the original Optimus. It features and all new carbon boom and solid core tail group. The rudder and elevator are extremely easy to assemble/disassemble with 2 screws holding the elevator to the boom and 1 screw holding the elevator control surface to the pre-installed horn. The rudder is simply held in place with tape and a quick release ball link is installed. The quality of these new parts is superb!
The all new boom features an "oval" cross section and the new pod has a lower wing mount for the center panel.

The super light Optimus for F5J is new for 2017. It features the latest composite technology in the wings, great care has been taken to save every gram of weight from the model. The wing skins and spar are much lighter than previous versions. Wing joiners are shorter and lighter. The fuselage pod is a lighter layup than the other versions of the Optimus as well as the spread tow carbon tail boom.
The wing is capable of accepting a modest amount of ballast although you should not fly the model in winds greater than 5 meters per second or about 11 mph.
As always each version of the Optimus comes with a complete hardware package and wire harness for wing and fuselage. Ballast and protective covers are sold separately.
The Optimus is brand new for 2015 and offers outstanding aerodynamic design combined with the very latest in carbon composite spread tow construction. At 3.83m wingspan it is ideally sized mid way between the popular 3.5m and 4m formats giving an ideal balance of performance and handling throughout its very wide speed range.
Made exclusively from new unidirectional bi-axial carbon spread tow material, the Optimus structure is extremely stiff and light with electric versions and lightweight glider versions ready to fly from as little as 1700g. This very low starting weight combined with a highly efficient wing planform and airfoil profiles gives the Optimus an outstanding float and minimum sink performance.
Great care has also been taken to ensure optimum performance towards the high speed end of the flight envelope as well. Accurate computer modelling and simulation means the Optimus series of airfoil profiles give the best velocity distribution and boundary layer control throughout its entire span and speed range. This translates directly to faster higher launches for F3J glider versions and excellent search and return capabilities for both glider and electric versions. Performance in wind is also good where the Optimus demonstrates good forward penetration and the ability to return from downwind thermals with more height to spare.
